Gemini starts generating images even when you did not ask it to
Contents
What Is Happening?
Sometimes Gemini starts generating images on its own even when you are only asking about images or asking it to help write an image-generation prompt. I have run into this myself. I was only asking about an image, and suddenly it started generating one in the middle of the conversation. It is genuinely annoying.
There are many similar reports in Google’s official support community as well.
- It switches to image generation mode even if I did not press “Generate image”
- Since 12/11 it often ignores instructions and generates unrelated images
Commonly Reported Patterns
It enters image generation mode even if you did not press the button
Gemini sometimes switches into image generation mode even though you never tapped the Generate image button in the input box.
It starts generating images when you are only talking about images
You ask something like, “What technique was used to create this image?” and Gemini starts generating a similar image on its own. That is not what you asked for.
You ask for a prompt, and it generates the image itself
You ask it to “come up with a prompt for image generation,” but instead of giving you a text prompt, it generates an image.
Why Does This Happen?
Native image generation was integrated starting with Gemini 2.0 Flash. Because text generation and image generation are now handled by the same model, it seems more likely to decide that “showing an image would be helpful.”
In short, this looks like the model being over-helpful. From the user side, generating images without being asked wastes tokens and interrupts the conversation with output you never intended to request.
Current Workarounds
Add a Rule in Saved Info
One workaround is to add a corrective instruction through Gemini’s settings.
- Open Settings and help from the lower-left of the Gemini screen
- Select Saved info
- Tap + Add
- Add a rule like this:
Only generate images when the user explicitly says “Please generate an image.” If the instruction is something like “Create a prompt for image generation,” provide only a text prompt suggestion and do not generate an image.
Some users report that this improves the behavior, though it does not seem to prevent it completely.
Warn It at the Start of the Conversation
Another option is to say up front, “Do not generate images in this conversation.” This seems to work better when combined with Saved info.
Is Google Doing Anything About It?
As of January 2026, I could not find any official Google fix or announcement specifically addressing this problem. Reports are piling up in the support community, but there is no visible response timeline.
It would be nice to have a setting that disables image generation entirely, but that option does not currently exist.
