Google Gemini Gems Moving to Skills: November 2026 Timeline & Limitations

IkesanContents

Google has announced that Gemini Gems will begin migrating to “Skills” for personal Google accounts starting in November 2026.
Gems allow users to store custom instructions and reference files for repeated use, while the successor Skills can be called directly within regular chat conversations. Existing Gems and supported reference files will migrate automatically.

9to5Google’s report on September 27 detailed in-app transition notices displayed in the Gem manager.
The alert indicates automatic migrations will start on November 17, with Gems remaining usable until an account is migrated.

Gem Support End Dates by Account Type

Google’s migration help page outlines different end-of-support schedules depending on the account type.

Account TypeGem Support End Date
Personal Google accountsNovember 2026
Google Workspace Business, Enterprise, and NonprofitsMarch 2027
Google Workspace for EducationJune 2027

Previously, I documented sharing Gems from a personal account to Google Workspace, but this announcement establishes separate timelines for personal and Workspace accounts.

Invoking Skills Directly Within Standard Chats

Skills store reusable prompts like Gems, but they do not require opening a separate Gem conversation. Users can invoke them directly in existing chat threads.
According to Google’s help page on creating and managing skills, typing / in the prompt box opens the skill selector. Gemini can also apply relevant skills automatically depending on the prompt. Multiple skills can be combined within the same task.

Google plans to switch the invocation prefix from / to @ in the future.
Skills do not have dedicated pages listing recent conversations; chat history appears in the standard sidebar instead.

As of September 30, 2026, the help documentation specifies that skills require an account holder aged 18 or older with “Gemini Apps Activity” enabled.
Support for work and school accounts is planned for a later rollout. While skills can be used in chat without a paid Google AI subscription, rollout is phased, so some accounts may not see the feature immediately.

Unsupported Tools and Sharing Features in Skills

Gems allowed users to pre-assign tools used during conversations, such as Canvas for editing text or code and Deep Research for generating structured research reports.

According to Google’s migration guide, video generation, music generation, Canvas, Deep Research, and guided learning are not supported in skills at this time.

Sharing skills with other users, attaching files from Google Drive, and importing Gemini Notebooks are listed as planned for future updates.

Manual Migration for Gems with Reference Files

Users who prefer not to wait for automatic migration can recreate Gems manually by copying the name, description, and instructions into a new skill.
Reference files need to be downloaded individually from the Gem edit screen.
Next, downloading the newly created skill provides a ZIP archive containing the skill definition in a SKILL.md file.
Placing SKILL.md and the downloaded reference files into the same folder allows updating the skill via the “Replace skill” upload option.

This blog previously relied on a Gem configured with reference images and prompt instructions to generate character illustrations.
While automatic migration covers reference files, it only applies to file types supported by Skills. Files connected via GitHub repositories are not supported in Skills at this time.
