Google Drive's AI Ransomware Detection Goes GA, but Always-On File Monitoring Has Its Own Risks

Google has promoted its AI-powered ransomware detection and recovery feature for Google Drive from beta to general availability in April 2026. Detection capability is reportedly 14x better than the beta version.
As a ransomware defense, this is welcome news. But flip it around, and the feature means Google is continuously monitoring your files with AI. Google has a track record of banning accounts over automated scan false positives, so anyone using Drive as their main workspace should think twice about what that means.
How the Ransomware Detection Works
The feature is built into Google Drive’s desktop app for Windows and macOS. An AI model continuously monitors file changes and detects patterns characteristic of ransomware — mass file encryption, bulk extension renaming, and similar behavior. When detected, cloud sync is immediately paused.
Even if local files get encrypted, pausing sync keeps the cloud copy clean. The feature also provides point-in-time file recovery to any state before the infection.

Detection requires Business Standard or above — the cheapest Business Starter plan ($7/user/month) is excluded. Recovery is available to personal users too. Detection only works on endpoints running the desktop app, so mobile infections or direct API-based attacks are not covered.
What “14x Better” Actually Means
Google’s announcement claims 14x improvement in detection capability over the beta. However, the breakdown — whether this means fewer false negatives, broader ransomware family coverage, or something else — has not been disclosed.
Traditional signature-based malware detection matches against known patterns, which means it lags behind new variants. AI behavior-based detection can catch unknown ransomware by identifying anomalous patterns like “mass file encryption at high speed,” regardless of the specific malware family.

Meanwhile, Google Is Watching Your Files
While welcoming this feature, we should acknowledge what it implies: Google is continuously monitoring your files with AI. If they’re watching file change patterns for ransomware detection, the technical infrastructure to inspect file contents for other purposes clearly exists.
In fact, Google officially introduced automated scanning of Google Drive files for policy-violating content in December 2021. Targets include CSAM (child sexual abuse material), malware, phishing, and copyright infringement.

The problem is that this pipeline is not perfectly accurate, and users have extremely limited means to appeal Google’s decisions.
False Ban Case Studies
Medical Photos Led to Permanent Account Suspension (2021)
In February 2021, a San Francisco software engineer known as “Mark” took photos of his toddler’s swollen genitals to show a pediatrician. His wife used Mark’s Android phone for a telemedicine appointment.
The photos were auto-backed up to Google Photos, and Google’s automated CSAM detection system flagged them. Two days later, his account was disabled with notifications about “harmful content” and “a serious violation of Google’s policies and might be illegal.” Google reported to NCMEC, and San Francisco police investigated but concluded “no crime.”
Yet even after police cleared him, Google refused to restore the account. Mark lost everything:
- Gmail (years of email history)
- Google Photos (all family photos)
- Google Drive (work files)
- Google Fi phone number
- Two-factor authentication access for other services
Even after the New York Times contacted Google, they continued to refuse restoration. Around the same time, a Texas father named Cassio had his account permanently suspended in nearly identical circumstances.
Third-Party Uploads to Shared Folder Got a YouTuber’s Channel Deleted (2023)
There’s a case from Japan too. Illustrator Naoki Saito (1M+ YouTube subscribers) used a shared Google Drive folder to collect fan artwork. A third party apparently uploaded problematic images to that folder, triggering Google’s automated detection. The result: YouTube channel deleted, Gmail suspended, Google Drive locked — the entire account was shut down.
Getting banned over files someone else uploaded to your shared folder is the scary part.
AI Developer Banned Over Dataset (Late 2025)
App developer Mark Russo uploaded the public AI dataset “NudeNet” to Google Drive while developing an NSFW detection app. The dataset was publicly available on GitHub and cited in academic papers, but it contained CSAM (which Russo didn’t know).
Google immediately suspended his account. He lost 14 years of account data, Firebase access, and AdMob revenue, with over 130,000 files deleted. After 404 Media reported the story, Google acknowledged it was a “non-malicious upload” and restored the account — but the 130,000 deleted files were not recovered.
A File Containing Just a Single Number Flagged as Copyright Infringement (2022)
Michigan State University assistant professor Emily Dolson’s case is even more absurd. A file called output04.txt uploaded to Google Drive was flagged as copyright infringement. Its contents: just the number “1.”
University of St Andrews researcher Chris Jefferson ran a reproduction experiment, uploading over 2,000 files. Files containing only specific numbers like “173,” “174,” or “451” were flagged as copyright infringement. Sharing was blocked, and no appeal was possible.
Google Docs Code Bug Caused Mass Lockouts (2017)
In October 2017, a code push bug at Google caused a portion of Google Docs to be falsely flagged as “abusive content.” File owners couldn’t share, and collaborators lost access. Journalists’ interview notes were among those affected.

October 2025 Policy Expansion
In October 2025, Google renamed its child protection policy from “CSAI” (Child Sexual Abuse Imagery) to “CSAE” (Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation), expanding scope to include grooming (befriending minors for exploitation) and sextortion (blackmail using intimate images).
The key change: violations now trigger immediate account suspension with no 7-day grace period. This is justified for genuine violations, but false positives now cause instant damage too.
Connection to the Ransomware Detection Feature
The new ransomware detection feature is technically distinct from the content scanning described above. It monitors file “change patterns” rather than file “contents” — behavior-based rather than content-based detection.
However, it is still part of Google expanding its file monitoring infrastructure. The system that “continuously monitors file changes to detect ransomware” is a system Google could repurpose for other objectives if they chose to.
Google’s privacy policy grants Google the right to analyze user data for detecting illegal content and protecting services. The only way to opt out is, effectively, to stop using Google.
Workspace AI Features and Tiered Pricing
The exclusion of ransomware detection from Business Starter is part of a broader AI feature tiering strategy across Google Workspace.
In January 2025, Google bundled Gemini (formerly Duet AI), previously a $20–30/user/month paid add-on, into all Business/Enterprise plans. In exchange, all plans got a 17–22% price increase. “AI included” sounds nice, but available Gemini features vary by plan.

Starting March 2026, “AI Expanded Access” and “AI Ultra Access” paid add-ons were introduced, offering Gemini 3 Pro access, Veo 3.1 video generation, Meet voice translation, and more. Basic AI is bundled, but advanced features require additional payment.
Google Flow
Google also announced Flow in February 2026, an AI video production tool developed by DeepMind. It’s a browser-based production environment integrating Veo (video generation), Imagen (image generation), and Gemini for natural language prompt-driven AI video creation and editing.
Access requires Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) or AI Ultra ($249.99/month) for individuals. Workspace users may receive credits through AI Expanded/Ultra Access add-ons. Note that “Workspace Studio” (a no-code automation tool) also uses the term “flow,” but refers to workflow automation — a completely different thing.
Upselling Through AI Features
Ransomware detection, Gemini, and Flow are all part of Google’s AI strategy. But each feature targets different plan tiers, creating a layered add-on structure.

A Business Starter user thinking “I want ransomware detection, so upgrade to Standard, and I also want full Gemini, so add the AI add-on” would see their monthly bill more than double. It’s hard not to see this as using AI features to push users toward higher-tier plans.
Risk Mitigation for Google Drive as Primary Storage
Completely avoiding Google’s ecosystem isn’t realistic. But the risks of going all-in on Google are clear, so these countermeasures are worth considering.

People have been trying to escape Google’s dominance for a while. Going back to NAS, self-hosting Nextcloud, moving to Proton. But nothing is as effortlessly all-in-one as Google, so most people try alternatives and drift back.
I keep thinking a strong domestic cloud storage service would change things — data stored in-country, support in the local language, and the ability to fight false bans under local law. That alone would make switching much easier. But no such thing exists, so here we are: depending on Google while keeping backups somewhere else.
